Lighting Bases

A lighting base is a support fixture for a light bulb. There are hundreds of individual bases for specific light bulbs; getting the correct one is crucial to the overall workings of a light source.

Types of lighting bases

There are many different bases for light bulbs. The most well known is the Edison screw base. This is found on most incandescent bulbs and many halogen, compact fluorescent, HID and LED bulbs.

Edison bulbs come with a variety of different base codes, with the common terms being medium, intermediate, candelabra and mogul. They are designed by base codes with the number after the E, representing the diameter of the base in millimeters.

Here are the most common Edison base codes:

  • Medium = E26
  • Intermediate = E17
  • Candelabra = E12
  • Mini Candelabra = E11
  • Miniature = E10
  • Midget = E5

What types of lighting can they be used for?

These lighting bases can be used for a variety of different lamp styles, from task lamps and desk lights to table lamps of all sizes.
